Cannabis institute publishes first journal

The Institute of Cannabis Research at Colorado State University-Pueblo has reached a milestone by publishing its new scholarly journal.

The journal, called the Journal of Cannabis Research, is sponsored by the institute and published with the assistance of Springer Nature, one of the world’s largest academic publishers.

“The process of launching a new journal is not a trivial task. Several faculty, staff and administrators at CSU-Pueblo worked hard on behalf of the ICR to see the journal launched,” said Chad Kinney, ICR director and professor of Chemistry.

The Journal is a multidisciplinary, open-access journal covering all aspects of research related to cannabis and its constituents.

Topics covered include agriculture and plant biology; commerce, business, and environment; the endocannabinoid system; pharmacology, biochemistry and genetics of cannabinoids; epidemiology and public health; medical cannabis; and history, regulation, and public policy.

Open-access means that all publications in the journal are posted on its website and available at no cost to anyone without requiring a subscription to the journal. Authors in an open-access journal ordinarily must pay an article-processing fee to have their work published; however, the journal is currently waiving this fee, so that authors have the benefit of open-access without the cost.

School officials said the journal would promote high quality science in the field of cannabis research and to distribute research on all aspects of cannabis to the widest possible audience through an open-access publishing model.

The journal would provide a forum for those conducting cannabis research to disseminate the results of their research activities.

Because the Journal of Cannabis Research is an open-access journal published online, the contents are available free to anyone from the general public to private research organizations to academic researchers.

Kinney said Gorelick has done an excellent job of recruiting a well-qualified, international, and distinguished set of section editors and members of the editorial board.

“I am proud to see our efforts to create this new journal bear fruit in this first issue. The broad field of cannabis research has expanded rapidly over the past few decades,” Gorelick said.
