West Michigan Cannabis Expo to inform consumers, businesses about marijuana industry

WALKER, MI — All things marijuana will be discussed at an upcoming West Michigan Cannabis Expo. The two-day event is the first of its kind at the DeltaPlex Arena, with at least 60 booths reserved for consumers and businesses to learn more about the industry, products and services.

A hemp product company, CBD retailers, hydroponics equipment retailers, legal professionals and accounting professionals are just some of the people who will be available to attendees at the event.

The West Michigan Cannabis Expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Oct. 5 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday Oct. 6 at the DeltaPlex Arena, 2500 Turner Ave. NW.

Chris Hudson, director of event development at the DeltaPlex, said he expects about 60 percent of attendees to be business-oriented and the other 40 percent to be consumers of cannabis or people interested in learning more.

“People who are looking to get into the business who have questions or are moving in that direction and need to go back and find some things to supplement, like payroll,” are likely to attend, Hudson said. “And then the other side, the consumer side who are there, maybe they’re growers and they want to grow better or they’re really into CBD.”

Proposal 1, making recreational marijuana legal in Michigan, passed in the November 2018 election. It regulates marijuana like alcohol, making it so that users must be over 21 years old to purchase, consume and grow marijuana. Medical marijuana use has been legal in Michigan since 2008.

Hudson said the cannabis expo was planned after seeing how much the industry in Michigan has grown since last year, with people from outside the state coming to Michigan “like the gold rush.”

“People are trying to get in and there are a lot of questions,” Hudson said. “The information is out there, but it’s kind of murky so we thought we’d put something together to help educate people who are trying to get in the business and help them gain resources.”

Throughout the weekend, there will be cannabis cooking demos and seminars covering licensing for businesses, cannabis as medicine, extraction, banking with cannabis and more.

Tickets are $15 for a one-day pass and $25 for both days. An upgraded pass for $50 gets attendees into a network mixer at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The event is for adults 21 and older only.

There will be no THC products at the event, as recreational marijuana business applications are not going to be accepted by the state until Nov. 1.
