It’s been a big summer for the cannabis industry, especially after the legalization of recreational marijuana back in April. Our state broke its all-time record in sales back in July, and August continued that trend.
Cannabis in New Mexico is taking off. Jessie Hunt is the spokesperson for the company that owns R.Greenleaf.
“We saw that the potential was there. We’re happy with the results, but we’re not totally surprised,” Hunt said.
Hunt also tells KOAT that business is booming after two record-breaking months of sales in New Mexico.
“The numbers speak for themselves, and anyone who wants to have any questions about it, I think we just continue to show that the numbers continue to go up,” said Hunt.
In the opening month of legal recreational cannabis, our state made more than $39,400,000 in total sales, $22 million in recreational cannabis. Four months later, in July, New Mexico pulled in a record $40,300,000. More than $23 million of that in recreational sales.
August eclipsed both months, breaking the all-time record with $40,600,000 in total sales. Our state also set a record in recreational sales with more than $24 million.
Andrew Vallejos is the Interim Director for the Cannabis Control Division.
“In most states, you see very early sales during the first few months. Typically sales will fluctuate after that. We don’t know if there will be seasonal variations in sales. Right now, it looks very encouraging,” Vallejos said.
Hunt doesn’t expect to see this trend in sales slowing down anytime soon.
“In terms of a ceiling, I don’t feel like we’ve identified that yet. I think there are many opportunities for us to continue to explore new markets,” said Hunt.
Hunt also tells KOAT that the state may have to regulate the number of cannabis licenses approved to prevent illegal products from entering the market.
