Scientists recommend easing marijuana rules citing ‘low chance of serious outcomes’

UNDATED (CNN Newsource/WKRC) – Federal scientists have recommended that marijuana should be removed from the nation’s most restrictive category of drugs.

These recommendations came as part of a scientific review that was conducted by the FDA and published online.

As it stands, marijuana is a schedule one drug. This means it’s in the same category as heroin and LSD.

Scientists concluded that “the likelihood of serious outcomes is low” when using marijuana, also noting its potential therapeutic uses. The scientists did note that people can become dependent on marijuana if they abuse it.

Marijuana has been shown to have medicinal purposes for the anorexia, nausea, and vomiting associated with chemotherapy.

The DEA has been considering reclassifying marijuana, potentially dropping it to a schedule three drug. President Biden has previously supported this drop.

Once marijuana is a schedule three drug, it would allow for easier restrictions on cannabis research and business.

The DEA is currently expected to announce its decision within the coming months.

Marijuana is currently legal in 38 states for medical use while 24 have it legal for recreational use.

Ohio recently became the 24th state to legalize marijuana for recreational use.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has supported expanding medical marijuana access in the state.
